Baker Mayfield was released upon his request by Carolina Panthers after learning he was not going to be the starter, or second string on the team going forward. On Tuesday, two days before the Rams’ week 14 game on NFL Thursday Night, Mayfield was signed by Los Angeles. It was not a for sure thing that he would play in the game just two days after he signed with the team.
Come Thursday, 10 minutes for the kickoff of the game against the Las Vegas Raiders, and it was still uncertain if Mayfield or John Wolford, who had been filling in for Matt Stafford, would start. It was announced that Wolford would indeed start but Mayfield would play in the game most likely.
The game was not going as planned through the first three quarters. Baker was making some good plays but they could only manage three points compared to 13 that the Raiders put up.
With over 12 minutes in the fourth quarter Baker led the Rams on a nine-minute touchdown-drive. The Rams’ defense made a big stop for them but got the ball back on just their own two-yard line with 1:45 left in the game.
A couple penalties plus two huge catches from Ben Skowronek set up a 23-yard fade for a touchdown to Van Jefferson for the win.
It was one of the most epic and entertaining performances in quite some while in the NFL by Baker.
