This 18-year-old kid Connor Bedard has been pinned as the savior of the NHL. The league is declining in popularity in the United States as the NBA, NFL, and MLB have been going strong and getting stronger. The MLS has been exploding as well with the addition of Lionel Messi to the league.
Bedard was the first pick in the draft and some people are saying that the league forced Chicago into the pick so he didn’t go to a less-marketable team like San Jose. Regardless, he is expected to be the next Wayne Gretzky. Tall shoes to fill but the league has been pushing him every chance they get.
In Bedard’s debut he got an assist, the next game he scored his first goal, and then in his third game he got another assist. Since then he has zero points and failed to take a shot in his last game. It’s way too soon to call Bedard a bust but I think the league and fans expected this highly touted No. 1 overall pick to have more than one goal and two assists at this point.
There have been reports that NHL viewings have surged early in the season. So, his presence at least has made an impact. We will see if this increased viewership continues with competition from the NBA as 90% of their season overlaps.
