The Damian Lillard trade saga continues. After signing an extension to play in Portland last summer Lillard has requested a trade. That would not have been the end of the world for the Portland Trailblazers but Lillard then said he would only want to be traded to the Miami Heat. He backed off of those claims and said he would play elsewhere in the NBA but then again he changed his mind.
Now, Lillard has claimed that he will not report to any training camp unless it is with the Miami Heat, according to Shams. This puts the Blazers back in a terrible spot. They can either just hold on to him while he doesn’t report to the team and let him go for nothing when his contract is up or they can trade him to the Heat or wait until he changes his mind. It is unlikely that any team now will want to trade for him if he apparently won’t play for them.
So, why did Lillard sign an extension with the Blazers if he was going to request a trade? Well, Portland likely said they would form a roster around him to win now but Lillard obviously doesn’t feel like they did that. So, with Lillard’s trade value lower than ever and the Heat not forming a good enough offer to Portland, where do we go from here?
