Did Jayson Tatum Get Robbed on Finals MVP?

The Boston Celtics are now officially the 2024 NBA Champions after beating the Dallas Mavericks in game 5 of the NBA Finals. It seemed at times during the game that Dallas may cut the lead down to single digits with a run but the lead stayed pretty steady at 20 points all game. The player who made sure the lead held was Jayson Tatum who was not named the finals MVP.

Tatum lead the Celtics in points, rebounds, and assists but still did not get the MVP. Many people are saying that he was robbed of the award and that seems like a reasonable thought. Those three stat categories are usually the main factors in which player takes home the award. It was Jaylen Brown though who averaged 1.4 less points than Tatum as well as 2.4 less rebounds and 2.2 less assists.

Where Jaylen Brown made his case was on the defensive end. Brown averaged a team high 2.4 combined steals and blocks while defending either Luka Doncic or Kyrie Irving, Dallas’ two top players who had rough series as a whole.

Was Brown’s performance on defense enough to makeup for the lesser statistical output on offense that Tatum had? Apparently it was in the eyes of the voters.
