Bill O’Brien was seen as one of the worst NFL coaches the last season in his tenure with the Houston Texans. The first six years were great for him in Houston with four division titles, but people are quick to forget when things are going bad.
And things were going bad in the 2020 season as the Texans started 0-4 after winning 10 games and a division title in 2019. It started before that though when Bill O’Brien, who had a major say in roster moves, traded their star wide receiver Deandre Hopkins in his prime for essentially a second round pick.
The major piece coming back to Houston for Hopkins was running back David Johnson who was coming off of a season with just 345 rushing yards in 13 games with the Arizona Cardinals. Johnson nearly had 700 rushing yards as the Texans offensive centerpiece in 2020 and then was already surpassed for the starting role in 2021.
Bill O’Brien immediately found himself a great football coaching gig for 2021 being the offensive coordinator for Alabama. He helped them reach the College Football Playoff Championship and develop Bryce Young into a Heisman winner.
Now he is being considered for the head coaching job of the Jacksonville Jaguars after things didn’t work out with Urban Meyer.
