NBA Betting Controversy

Betting on the NBA and all major sports has blown up in the United States with the legalization of sports betting over the past few years. This hasn’t come without controversy, however. A handful of players from the MLB, NFL, and NBA have been involved in potential cases of betting on themselves or other games. The latest one is major redflag that is under investigation.

Jontay Porter is a player on the Toronto Raptors who has recently been playing a decent amount of minutes due to some injuries. On January 26th bets were heavily placed on the unders for Porter of 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.5 threes. In that game he played just four minutes before leaving the game with an eye injury that had been a known injury heading into the game. DraftKings reported that the most won bets on the day were for Porter under 0.5 threes. He went under on all of the above after scoring zero points with three rebounds and one assist.

In March we saw the same thing essentially. Porter played just three minutes before leaving the game due to an illness. He didn’t score and had two rebounds. His props were set at 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. This was also reported by DraftKings that Porter’s unders were the most won bets on the day.

Was this a scheme set up by Porter and his friends/family betting on him when he knew he would check himself out of the game early? Or was Porter actually going into the game with a known injury and a potential sickness so bettors knew to bet on his unders? We will see how this investigation plays out.
