NBA Free Agency Grades

NBA free agency has begun and already some of the top players from the league have been on the move. Let’s grade some of these players signing to new teams.

Klay Thompson to the Dallas Mavericks: A

This is a win for Dallas who needed more shooting in the NBA Finals. Outside of Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic the Mavericks really only had PJ Washington to stretch the floor. Adding Thompson gives them another shooter out there who can still get his own shot as well, something else they were missing, a third shot creator. The deal is friendly as well at less than $20 million per year.

Pau George to the Philadelphia 76ers: A-

The only reason that this doesn’t get an A+ is because the 76ers were seemingly bidding against themselves. After Orlando signed Kentavious Caldwell Pope, Paul George didn’t really have any where else to go who would pay him what Philadelphia did. This team looks great on paper. You have an elite scoring guard in Tyrese Maxey, a scorer and defending wing in George, and one of the best all around big men and players at center in Joel Embiid.

Isaiah Hartenstein to the OKC Thunder: B+

This would be an A but it was a big overpay. He’s getting $87 million over three years. Hartenstein has been in the league for 7 years and really only played his first meaningful minutes in the last half of last season. I guess that was enough for OKC to use their salary cap space on. It should be a good fit but it cost them a lot.
