The NBA Rookie of the Year will be an interesting race to follow this year. The favorite is Victor Wembanyama but following him closely is Chet Holmgren and then Scoot Henderson. There may be a surprise candidate as well when we get into the season.
The Case for Victor Wembanyama
After a poor Summer League debut, Wembanyama scored 27 points with 12 rebounds and 3 blocks in game two in just 27 minutes. He looked like he could be a dominant defensive player but also scorer. There were flashes where he looked unstoppable with a couple of dunks and then jumpers over the top of people.
The Case for Chet Holmgren
Chet Holmgren has a similar game as Wembanyama. They are both well over seven feet tall and can handle the ball and shoot it. Both of these players will likely have great defensive stats and make a big impact on their team next year. It may come down to who scores the ball better next year.
The Case for Scoot Henderson
If or when Dame Lillard is traded, a massive void will need to be filled on this team. Scoot Henderson could step in and fill a lot of that void that Lillard left which is over 30 points per game. If Henderson averages well over 20 points and Wembanyama and Holmgren are great defensively but only average around 14 points, does Scoot get the nod for the award?
