NFL Position Battles to Watch

Baker Mayfield vs Kyle Trask

After Tom Brady officially retired from the NFL it was expected that the Bucs’ second-round pick in 2021 Kyle Trask would get a chance to start this season. While that may still be the case, Tampa Bay has a solid roster that won a Super Bowl just a couple of years ago, minus Brady of course. The team went out and signed Baker Mayfield after he had a resurgence with the Los Angeles Rams at the end of last season. It is now expected that Mayfield will win the job but we could see Trask at some point this season if things go haywire.

Gardner Minshew vs Anthony Richardson

The Indianapolis Colts used the fourth-overall pick in this year’s draft to take Anthony Richardson but he is also known as one of the biggest projects in the league. Unless he wows in the preseason it is unlikely that he wins this starting job. Gardner Minshew has been basically a solid career backup but in a weak division he could lead this team to the playoffs, or close to it. That could mean that if Richardson doesn’t win the job early then he may not play at all in his rookie season.

Khalil Herbert vs. D’Onta Foreman

The first non-QB battle will be a fun one to watch in the preseason. Khalil Herbert has been the backup running back in Chicago the past two seasons but still saw over 100 carries both years. Now, with David Montgomery gone, he should have a better chance at being the lead back but the team also brought in D’Onta Foreman who has also been a career backup but played extremely well whenever called upon for a big workload. Foreman may win the job but Herbert is still expected to be involved in the offense.
