Every year players go into the NFL preseason battling for various positions. This year is no different, and there are some high profile position battles that will be going on to watch out for.
Baker Mayfield vs Sam Darnold Panthers
Darnold struggled in his first season in Carolina. Now the team brought in Baker Mayfield via a trade recently to compete to be the starter. There is definitely no promise that was given to Mayfield when the Panthers traded for him that he would start. Even though things didn’t go great for Darnold in his first year with the team, he will not lay down for Mayfield to take his spot.
No. 1 Wide Receiver in Green Bay
After the Green Bay Packers traded Davante Adams and let Marques Valdez Scantling go in free agency, they were left with Allen Lazard to take the No. 1 spot. They did go out and get Sammy Watkins, who is expected to have a big role, and drafted Christian Watson early in the second round. While those are the main three candidates to be the No. 1 wide receiver in Green Bay, the veteran Randall Cobb, second-year potential breakout Amari Rodgers, and 4th round-pick Romeo Doubs are all players to watch as well.
Trey Lance vs Jimmy G 49ers
This quarterback battle may be talked about all season depending on how these two play. As of right now, the 49ers have said they are going with Lance. It has been reported that many players on the team prefer Jimmy G and if Lance struggles throughout the preseason and early season, the team may be forced to give Jimmy G another chance.
