Nikola Jokic has won back-to-back NBA MVPs. This is actually more common than the average NBA fan would think.
The last back-to-back MVP was Giannis Antetokounmpo, who won it twice right before Jokic won his two. Those came in the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Before that, Stephen Curry won back-to-back MVPs in 2015 and 2016. Lebron also did it twice in 2009, 2010 and in 2012, 2013.
Jokic is however only the second player who was drafted in the second round to win the award. He was famously selected during a Taco Bell commercial during ESPN’s broadcast of the 2015 NBA Draft.
Last season, during his first MVP season, Jokic averaged 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. This year, in his second MVP year, he improved on those numbers, as he averaged 27 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists.
The Denver Nuggets suffered a first round exit in the Western Conference Playoffs after they were eliminated in five games by the Golden State Warriors. The Nuggets went the entire year without Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr.
Next season, the Nuggets expect those two players back to the lineup and for the team to compete better with them plus Jokic all in the lineup together for an entire season.
