Predicting First Round NBA Playoff Upsets

Wizards v/s Thunder 03/14/11

Every year it seems there is an upset in the NBA Playoffs. The first place Utah Jazz were upset last year and the first place Philadelphia 76ers were as well. This year, there are few candidates who could very well be upset.

2. Boston Celtics vs 7. Brooklyn Nets

The Nets are one of the most talented teams in the entire league with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving on their roster. They also have Ben Simmons who could return for this round one series. They easily won their play-in game and now face the Celtics. Boston went from 11th in the Eastern Conference all the way to the second best team. They also lost their defensive anchor in Robert Williams, which will hurt Boston.

4. Philadelphia 76ers vs 5. Toronto Raptors

Another first round matchup could end badly for Philadelphia. The 76ers are only one seed higher than Toronto but a lot of people put them in the championship. The Raptors came all the way from out of the play-in to the fifth best team in just a couple of months and they are hot. This could easily be an upset here.

3. Golden State Warriors vs 6. Denver Nuggets

The Warriors looked like one of the best teams in the NBA in the beginning of the year. The last few months of the regular season they really struggled, going from first to third. Now, in the playoffs they will face a defensive and energetic Nuggets team. With how good the Nuggets have been and how bad the Warriors have been recently, Golden State will need a big series here to just get out of the first round.
