The NFL is always full of surprise cuts on the last couple of days to trim NFL rosters down to 53 players. This year was no exception. Let’s look at some players that were players who surprisingly got cut from their teams.
Alex Leatherwood Raiders
The 2021 first-round pick didn’t last long with the team that drafted him. It is rare that a first-round pick gets cut before they make it to their second year in the league.
Marlon Mack Texans
Houston cut what many people thought was their starting running back heading into the year. Mack had some good years with the Colts before getting buried on the depth chart and then picked up by Houston. He will now look for another team.
Kellen Mond Vikings
Some people thought that Mond could be the future at quarterback for the Vikings. He was taken early in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft but was replaced this season as the backup by newly signed Nick Mullens. Sean Mannion was another backup last year for the Vikings and he was also cut, leaving Minnesota with just two QBs on the roster this year.
Josh Johnson Broncos
The Broncos looked like they had an ideal backup to Russell Wilson. The 14-year-NFL veteran Johnson got most of the second-team snaps in training camp and preseason games but was cut. It leaves Denver with Brett Rypien as their backup, who has started one career game where he threw three interceptions.
