Why are the Spurs Trying to Trade Dejounte Murray?

Dejounte Murray was a first-time All Star last season. He improved his NBA stats from 15.7 points and 5.4 assists per game to 21.1 and 9.2 assists in one year. Now, the San Antonio Spurs are trying to trade their best player and one that has broken out into a star.

The big question is why are they trying to trade him? Maybe they feel that they don’t have enough talent around him and are trying to completely rebuild. Maybe they are trying to trade him while his trade value is at the highest and they don’t view him as the best player on a good team. Whatever the case is, these teams are rumored to be trying to acquiring him:

Atlanta Hawks

The Hawks want to pair Murray with Trae Young. It sounds like an odd pairing with two point guards, but both could play off the ball potentially. John Collins is also not involved in these trade talks as the Spurs want three first round picks and young players in return.

New York Knicks

The Knicks are rumored to be signing Jalen Brunson, but they are also linked to Murray. Murray is probably a better piece than Brunson if they can get him.

Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Wolves are planning on moving on from D’Angelo Russell. That leaves a whole at point guard that Murray could fill. A trio of Murray, Anthony Edwards, and KAT sounds pretty good.
